Raising Vegan Kids

As a vegan parent, some of the most frustrating moments occur at mealtimes when you are out and about. Not because you can’t just pop into McDonald’s or toss your kid some Dunkaroos. But because eating with other parents in parks or shopping centres or at playgroups or preschool outings always provokes the same questions: “You’re vegan? Are your kids? How can you feed your children such a restricted diet? How can you deprive them of so much?”

So, instead of trying to explain for the umpteenth time why feeding kids a balanced vegan diet is anything but restrictive and infinitely better than feeding them traditional “kid food” (think processed crap like chicken nuggets, pop and sugary cereals and snacks), I’m just gonna hand out cards with this URL. Here’s to the next generation of Vegan MoFoers!

Sounds to me like they have a very unrestrictive diet! What about all those kids that only ever weat the same old junk? Now that’s restrictive! Way to go you!

Thanks so much! The best way to create healthy adults is to feed your kids healthy, real food. The only problem is that my kids are sometimes abrasively judgmental about other people’s food choices. Ie. “Ewwwww! McDonald’s is like eating poison, you know!” We’re working on tact. Sort of.

oh this is great. I don’t have kids (don’t plan to), but I have wondered about the challenges when dealing with others. Showing other parents this blog would surely shut them up. :)
